Case Study: Davidon Cool Water – Cinematic Liquid Simulation

3D Product Visualisation

Project Overview

Objective:
To create a premium hero render for a perfume inspired by the freshness and energy of water as a luxury product suitable for advertising campaigns, social media, and product launches. The goal was to make the liquid itself communicate the fragrance's identity while keeping the product as the focal point.

Technical Breakdown

  • Project Type: 3D Product Animation

  • Industry: Fragrance / Cosmetics

  • Focus: Water Simulation

  • Deliverables: Hero Animation, Product Render

  • Key Techniques: Fluid Simulation, Particle System, Physically Based Shaders, Cinematic Lighting

Challenge

The biggest challenge was balancing three elements:

  • Creating photorealistic water motion without distracting the viewer's attention from the bottle.

  • Capturing thousands of tiny droplets that enhance a premium feel with realism rather than adding visual noise.

  • Using dramatic lighting to reveal the liquid while preserving the dark luxury aesthetic.

Water Simulation 3D

Visual Direction

The visual feel of the project was inspired by deep ocean currents and crashing waves. Instead of showing calm water, we designed an energetic splash surrounding the perfume bottle to reinforce the freshness associated with the fragrance. The contrast of light colors in bottle design and dark background while combining elements of bright microdroplets complete an interplay of visual elements that complete this 3D product animation project.

Water Simulation

The element of focus for this project is the detailing being put in the water simulation. From the motion of waves to the droplets wrapping the bottle which offers a rough but photorealistic feel which simulates real life visuals.

Apart from it you can observe fine mist and droplets being scattered as the bottle falls off. The motion of water around the bottle and the way droplets splash around simulates the real world and pulls the viewer attention.

Large fluid forms establish movement, while secondary droplets communicate speed and impact. This layering prevents the water from appearing like a single solid mesh.

Droplet Detailing

After water simulation the next idea of focus was detailing being put in droplets as part of the project. There are multiple varieties of droplets being used all over the project:

  • Micro droplets: in order to create a basic splash effect micro droplets are used in a realistic manner which add to the oceanic rough theme of the project.

  • Surface mist: Surface mist is used to create a frame to display the drop of the bottle and invite user’s attention which is later followed by blast wave motion to make the animation seem real.

  • Random distribution: The drops have been displayed in a random distribution to present a realistic description of water droplets as it is in the real world.

  • Scale variation: In the animation the droplets are of a variety of sizes which have been adjusted as per the impact of the water bottle in the surface and their position which also includes surrounding the parts of the bottle. Identical droplet sizes would’ve made the animation look artificial, so variation was introduced.

3D Product Lighting

Lighting

The lighting setup was designed to emphasise both the product and the surrounding fluid. A strong key light defines the bottle's silhouette, while rim lighting separates it from the dark background. Cool blue fill lighting enhances the glass material and reinforces the freshness associated with the fragrance. Carefully controlled specular highlights allow individual droplets to catch the light, adding sparkle and depth without overwhelming the composition.

Key Light

The key light’s focus has been on the bottle edges. It highlights the bottle in a way that its 3D layout has been displayed in detail.

Rim Light

It separates the bottle from the dark background and brings the attention of the customers to the bottle.

Blue Fill Light

Enhances the cool-toned glass and brings definition and detail to the bottle design.

Specular Highlights

They create reflections on droplets to make them sparkle and highlight them by creating a contrast with shadows and microdroplets are separated from each other due to its effect. The lighting was designed to reveal the fluid's shape rather than flood the scene with brightness.

3D Product Composition

Composition

The composition guides the viewer's attention through the frame. The eye naturally lands on the perfume bottle first due to its central placement and strong lighting. The surrounding water creates directional movement that frames the product, while bright droplets act as visual accents that lead the eye around the composition. The use of negative space ensures the scene remains uncluttered despite the complexity of the simulation.

3D Glass Shader

Materials & Shaders

Glass shader:

The perfume bottle uses a physically based glass shader to recreate the appearance of real glass. Transparency, reflections, and subtle colour absorption allow the bottle to appear premium while maintaining visibility of the liquid and branding.

Water shader:

A dedicated water shader was used to achieve realistic reflections and transparency throughout the fluid simulation. This ensures that the waves and droplets react naturally to the lighting while maintaining the clean, refreshing aesthetic of the scene.

Refraction:

Refraction was carefully adjusted so that light bends realistically as it passes through both the glass bottle and the surrounding water. This creates depth and gives the materials a physically accurate appearance.

Transparency:

Transparency of glass has been balanced to keep the bottle visually clear while ensuring that reflections and highlights remained prominent enough to define its shape.

Reflection:

Controlled reflections help define the contours of the bottle while allowing the surrounding water to integrate naturally with the product instead of competing for attention.

Glossiness:

High gloss values were applied to both the bottle and water droplets, allowing them to capture crisp specular highlights that reinforce the premium aesthetic

3D Product Render

Final Result

The final render presents the perfume as powerful, refreshing, and premium. The combination of fluid simulation, controlled droplet distribution, and cinematic lighting creates a visually dynamic composition while keeping the product clearly identifiable.
